Selfies from space?

Well, not exactly, but NASA has a special project for Earth Day: creating a mosaic of our planet with your photos. Using the hashtag "#GlobalSelfie," social media users can beam up their images to contribute to the picture of Earth, The Washington Post reported.

The agency encourages people to take pictures that show where they live, whether it's by mountains, a lake or a park.

"Get outside and show us mountains, parks, the sky, rivers, lakes--wherever you are, there's your picture," said the NASA website. "Tell us where you are in a sign, words written in the sand, spelled out with rocks."

NASA also has printable signs in various languages for people to use. The agency will keep an eye on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and Flickr to spot the selfies, which will be used to create a special picture of our planet.

"With 17 Earth-observing missions orbiting our home planet right now--and several more launching this year--NASA studies Earth's atmosphere, land and oceans in all their complexity," NASA said.

"This satellite data helps NASA scientists piece together a clear picture of our planet from a scientific viewpoint. On this Earth Day, we wanted to create a different picture of our planet--a crowd-sourced collection of snapshots of the people of Earth that we could use to create one unique mosaic of the Blue Marble."

As reported by Space.com, NASA is also celebrating Earth Day with live events in Washington, D.C.

The agency is having something of a red-letter year with five NASA missions to learn more about Earth planned for 2014. The Earth-observing missions help NASA scientists get a better look at our planet from a scientific perspective.
