Meteor-Like Object Captured Flying Over Northern Russia (VIDEO)

A dashcam video captured a fireball flying over the northwestern Russian city of Murmansk this weekend, according to NBCNews.com.

The event took place a little over a year after a meteor hit Chelyabinsk, Russia, making headlines around the globe.

The meteor glowed 30 times brighter than the sun and injured over 1,500 people last year. It damaged thousands of buildings and other locations that is home to approximately one million civilians, according to Reuters.

The fireball that was captured this weekend was a little less dramatic however.

No one was injured and no damage has been reported as of press time. The fireball probably would have gone unnoticed if it wasn't for dashcam footage.

A number of drivers with dashcams out on the street at the time reported seeing a "bright trail of light" at 2:10 a.m. on April 19. The first witness identified the object as a meteorite, though some have argued that the object was cosmic debris re-entering the atmosphere.

Officials have not yet declared the authenticity of the object, according to The Russian Times.

The American Meteor Society said it is a rare event when a meteor makes it to the Earth's surface. Approximately 99.99 percent of meteors completely disintegrate before reaching the Earth's surface, causing many to believe the fireball was a sham.

"Visually, it's a bright one, but not unusually bright," NBC News space analyst James Oberg said.

A video of the incident posted on YouTube has collected over 1.1 million views as of press time.
