2015 Chevrolet Volt Expected To Have 60-Mile Electric Range

The redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Volt is expected to feature two powertrain offerings and a battery range of 60 miles, an industry source told Edmunds.com.

General Motors will continue to offer the plug-in hybrid powertrain used in the 2014 Volt for a base model that may cost thousands less. The added trim option will have a new, more efficient electric motor and lithium batteries that will improve the car's pure electric driving range.

"Basically, there will be two (powertrain) choices, kind of like a car might have a four-cylinder engine and a V6 option," an industry source who asked not to be named told Edmunds. "This would be kind of the same thing."

Chevrolet places the 2014 Volt's driving range at 380 miles with a full battery charge and a full tank of gas for the 1.4-liter four-cylinder traditional engine. The front-wheel-driving vehicle is powered by an electric motor with 149 horsepower, and it can go 38 miles in electric-only mode.

The 2015 version, which will likely debut late next year, is expected to top those figures with a 60-mile electric range and a farther overall range.

The current Volt powertrain has served its customers well and won't be retiring any time soon, a Chevrolet spokesman told Edmunds.

"The current Volt continues to do well in its current stage with the current technology," spokesman Mike Albano said. "We found a winning formula and we are not going to change it."

The Volt competes in its segment with such models as the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
