Hyundai Launches 2015 Sonata at New York Auto Show

Hyundai's new midsize Sonata debuted Wednesday at the New York Auto Show, featuring a stylish redesign and new safety improvements.

The 2015 Sonata has a "more conservative" design with added sleekness intended to reduce wind resistance, USA TODAY reported.

According to the carmaker, the updated midsize offering has a stiffer body structure and a quieter ride. Built at the Montgomery, Ala., plant, the seventh-generation sedan will be available at dealerships early this summer, Hyundai said in a press release.

For safety, the new Sonata has seven airbags, while optional safety systems include collision warning, blind spot alert, rear cross traffic Alert and lane departure warning, USA TODAY reported.

Models purchased with the navigation option will have an 8-inch touchscreen display and iPhone compatibility, while Apple's CarPlay system is coming later this year.

The 2015 version has been updated with a larger grille and cleaner lines with improved performance and stability. Hyundai kept some elements from the earlier model, opting to keep the "coupe-like roofline" from the last Sonata, and made changes including a more roomy interior.

"We crafted the shape of the 2015 Sonata in the same way an award-winning chef refines his recipe over the years," Chris Chapman, chief designer of Hyundai Design North America, said in a statement.

"With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai took the mid-size sedan from a meal to a gourmet dinner. The evolution to Fluidic Sculpture 2.0's more taut, modern lines reflect the improvements in refinement and driving dynamics for 2015."

On the exterior, the new sedan has standard LED daytime running lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. In the Sport trim, the Sonata runs on a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with dual exhaust, while models in Sport 2.0 trim have added features such as a unique rear bumper fascia, quad exhaust tips and 18-inch alloy wheels, according to Hyundai.
