NASA to Auction Off Items From Past Space Missions in NYC

NASA has announced it will auction off memorabilia and artifacts that were used during past missions to the Moon later on this month.

The auction will take place from April 14 to 19 in New York City, according to the Associated Press.

NASA has confirmed it will showcase rare items like shoulder straps with dust from the Moon that belonged to astronauts Alan Bean and Charles Conrad of the Apollo 12 mission.

The item is expected to sell from anywhere between $25,000 to $35,000 due to the mission it was involved in and the space dust, according to AP

A sight ring that was used by James Irwin of Apollo 15 will also be up for auction. The ring is expected to sell from $20,000 to $30,000.

"It was used in the module when it landed on the moon and also on takeoff," space history specialist Cassandra Hatton told the Associated Press. "It's extremely rare, probably the only one in private hands."

A checklist sheer with legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin's notes on it is expected to be another popular item.

The checklist was Aldrin's and Neil Armstrong's guide to getting back to Earth from the Moon, according to AP.

Mercury-era spacesuits used for the Mercury space program will be up for auction as well. The suits, which were never utilized in space, are expected to sell for around $8,000 to $12,000.

"The sale really covers from the early days of space exploration all the way through ASTP (Apollo-Soyuz Test Project) which is kind of a symbolic end of the space race. So we start with telescopes, before we though [sic] we could even possibly go up to the moon. We've got some globes and then we go into the Mercury program, Gemini program," said Cassandra Halton, Bonham's space history specialist, to AP.

A Soviet-era Strizh spacesuit created to protect cosmonauts from ejection, is expected to sell for $15,000 to $20,000. It is one of only 27 created for training and test purposes between 1981 and 1991.

Make sure to check back after the auction for more information on the items that were sold.
