iOS 7.1 Jailbreak Update: New Download Works For Some Devices

If you're one of the many people looking to jailbreak iOS 7.1, and you don't have a device higher than the iPhone 4, you may be in luck.

A hacker proved on YouTube this week that he was able to jailbreak Apple's latest operating system, as the silent video just shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 powering up in untethered mode.

The hacker, who is calling himself "insane programmer" winocm, shows the entire process in the video screen to screen, making sure to even hit the Settings button to show the phone is running on iOS 7.1.

One would think this means all Apple users running iOS 7.1 can now jailbreak their phones, but a comment on the video titled "All things jailbreak," says the jailbreak only works for Apple products with A4 chips for now.

"If you've followed the work of Winocm in the past, you'll probably be aware that he tends to look at older devices and pieces of firmware, and while, in his accompanying tweet for the video, he didn't stipulate the device on which he had achieved this untethered boot, it's almost certainly an iPhone 4 powered by the Apple A4 processor," said Redmond Pie's Ben Reid in a blog post.

Users with the iPhone 4, the original iPad, and the 4th generation iPod Touch can jailbreak there devices currently.

Winocom and fellow jailbreaker iH8sn0w are currently working on jailbreaking devices with A5 chips, according to CNET.com.

"The older models are inherently easier to hack, and, of course, less relevant than the more recent devices, but nevertheless, this is very good progress as far as an eventual jailbreak for iOS 7.1 goes. If nothing else, it shows that work is being done to try and find exploits," said Reid.

If you haven't downloaded iOS 7.1, the previous Evasi0n jailbreak still works, but once you do, the current OS blocks the Evasi0n download.
