'Off the Grid' FireChat Messaging Works without Wi-Fi

FireChat is a new app for iOS devices that lets users chat with each other without Internet connection. The catch is that they have to be within 30 feet of one another.

The free messaging app, which works on iOS 7 and iOS 7.1, launched on Thursday, Yahoo Tech reported.

"We may think that we depend on the Internet for everything. FireChat proves that it's not always the case," said Micha Benoliel, CEO of Open Garden, which created the app, as reported by BGR/Yahoo Tech.

The "off the grid" app uses the Multipeer Connectivity Framework, one of Apple's most advanced iOS 7 technologies, according to the app description. Along with instant messages between individuals or a group, FireChat also supports photo transfers.

Messaging works between iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad devices without draining the battery, while FireChat's technology is available both in the United States and abroad. It is also purported to work on a train and in the subway.

"Now you can chat with people around you--even if there is no Internet connection or mobile phone coverage. It just works and it's free," the website said.

"Whether you're on the beach or in the subway, at a big game or a trade show, camping in the wild or at a concert, or even abroad, simply fire up the app with a friend or two and find out who else is there."

Besides being useful for connecting with friends, FireChat could be a way for users to communicate during "scenarios such as disaster recovery and public safety."

The app description doesn't touch on any privacy concerns or specify how people find each other through FireChat.
