Former Microsoft Employee Charged With Leaking Trade Secrets to Blogger

A former employee of Microsoft Corp admitted to company investigators this week to providing confidential documents and information to a blogger, according to documents released by a Seattle federal court.

The former Microsoft employee, Alex Kibkalo, allegedly passed trade secrets to a blogger in France.

The blogger has not been identified yet, though the individual is well-known in the Microsoft blogging community for posting screenshots of pre-release version of the Windows Operating System.

The blogger previously stated he was from Quebec in an attempt to hide his identity, according to Reuters.

An investigation conducted by Microsoft confirmed "unauthorized transmissions of proprietary and confidential trade secrets," according to the court documents.

Investigators found an email from Kibkalo within the blogger's Hotmail account, confirming that he shared confidential information.

"We take protection of our intellectual property very seriously, including cooperating with law-enforcement agencies who are investigating potential criminal actions by our employees or others," a Microsoft spokesman said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

A lawyer representing Kibkalo has not commented as of press time.

The blogger has admitted to posting information on his Twitter and websites, along with selling Windows Server activation keys on eBay, according to court documents.

Back in July and August 2012, Kibkalo reportedly uploaded pre-released software updates of Windows 8 RT and ARM devices, and the Microsoft Activation Server Software Development Kit (SDK) to a computer in Washington, according to Microsoft's investigation.

Kibkalo worked for Microsoft for seven years, according to Reuters. He received a poor performance review in 2012 and said he was going to resign if the review was not changed.
