2014 Ford Explorer Earns Five Stars for Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given a five-star overall safety rating to the 2014 Ford Explorer SUV, awarding high safety marks to the vehicle in multiple crash tests.

The Explorer earned five stars for safety after front and side impact crash tests as well as four stars in the rollover crash tests, Edmunds.com reported.

The vehicle is equipped in standard trim with such safety features as side curtain airbags on all three rows, electronic stability control and antilock brakes. Another optional safety feature is inflatable seat belts on the second-row outboard seats, according to Edmunds.

In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the Explorer earned a "good" rating for every test. One of the tests was the moderate overlap crash test, which uses force similar to what would happen if two vehicles of equal weight hit each other while going around 40 mph.

The Explorer competes in its segment with the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Highlander.

Ford announced in January that the 2014 Explorer will sell for $30,910 with an $895 destination fee. The price reflects a $915 price increase compared with its predecessor, the 2013 Explorer, according to the automaker.

Base Explorer vehicles can come with either a 3.5-liter V6 engine or the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. The Explorer has a fuel economy of up to 28 mpg on the highway, according to Ford.

The 2014 Explorer is available in four models: Explorer, XLT, Limited and Sport, according to the website.
