This Mercedes Is Covered in Real Gold

Probably the most decadent vehicle to be featured at this year's Geneva Motor Show is the Carlsson CS50 Versailles, a Mercedes S-Class tricked out with more than a thousand sheets of gold leaf.

Some 200 man hours went into painstakingly trimming the car's body panels with delicate sheets of gold leaf that are 80 x 80 mm, Jalopnik reported. A special squirrel brush is the key to laying the gold leaves on the car's surface.

"This is merely the start of an elaborate process taking more than 14 days, during which the bespoke clear-coat undergoes its labor intensive application, drying and sealing to ensure a unique and perfect finish whose practicality and durability is comparable to that of conventional paint," the German tuner said, as reported by Jalopnik.

Carlsson plans on making 25 of the luxurious vehicles, which will head to China for some uber-rich clients.

"Specifically developed for China's ultra-wealthy "'Taipan' clients; the new 'royalty' of the Middle Kingdom," the CS50 Versailles has sold 10 models already, according to Jalopnik.

Besides the body panels, 30 exterior and 278 interior parts were additionally covered in gold, BenzInsider reported. The interior alone took some 100 hours of man power to festoon with gold.

In case all that gold isn't enough of an extra, buyers can spring for options that include HD displays, REVOX sound system and a humidor, according to BenzInsider.

Available in three models, the Versailles runs on a V12 twin-turbocharged engine that produces 700 horsepower and starts at $370,000.

Carlsson describes the car as "pure gold finish inside and out" and "a tribute to the French aristocratic way of life," according to GTSpirit.com.
