Honda Insight Hybrid Production to End This Summer

Honda has officially confirmed production of the Honda Insight will end this summer, according to the Japanese automaker.

Honda said in a statement that it will have enough of the second-generation vehicles to sell through the end of 2014. Once production ends this summer though that's it for the affordable hybrid as it will switch its focus to improving its two-motor hybrid system.

The two-motor system debuted with the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in and also helps run the Honda Accord Hybrid.

"Our hybrid vehicle strategy will focus on new models aimed at delivering the class-leading fuel economy and performance our customers' desire in segments that represent significant growth opportunities," said Michael Accavitti, senior vice president of auto operations at American Honda, in a statement.

It competes in the same segment as vehicles like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Toyota Prius.

Honda sold 339 Insight hybrids last month, a 13 percent drop compared to 2013, according to a company sales report.

The Honda vehicle was the first mass-produced hybrid in the U.S.

The Insight is sold for $19,495, including a $790 shipping fee. It is capable of delivering 41 mpg in city driving and 44 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates.
