NASA Releases Real-Life 'Gravity' Photos

The Alfonso Cuarón-directed film "Gravity" and its cutting-edge depiction of astronauts in space may have nearly swept at this year's Academy Awards, but recent NASA photos serve as a reminder that the real thing is even more spectacular.

The agency's Goddard Space Flight Center published a new photo set on Flickr on Sunday named "Gravity--NASA's Real-Life Images from Space," The Verge reported.

"Gravity," which garnered seven Oscars Sunday night, puts stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney on a shuttle, relying heavily on CGI to create the world of space. NASA's photos are even more beautiful than the award-winning special effects in the film.

The images include shots of Earth at night, one photo highlighting the cities of Spain, Portugal and Madrid, the Daily Mail reported. Another photo shows Cairo and Alexandria at night from 220 miles above Earth.

"Gravity" proved to be Oscar gold on Sunday, bringing in a slew of technical awards that included Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing. While it dominated the event with the most wins, "12 Years a Slave" beat it out to take Best Picture in a heavyweight field that also included the critically lauded "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."
