Oral-B 'Smart' Toothbrush Tells You Where To Clean

The Internet of things has a new acquisition: your toothbrush.

Proctor & Gamble's Oral-B product line has announced a new toothbrush to be available in stores this summer that promises to revolutionize your cleaning rituals by communicating with your smartphone.

The "connected toothbrush" will keep track of the user's oral hygiene and use Bluetooth to let your smartphone know if you're brushing your teeth well enough or not, Yahoo Tech reported.

The brush will collect information including which part of your mouth you brush the most frequently and let you know if you need to change it up. The free app will give you "real-time guidance" during your tooth-brushing routine, according to Yahoo Tech.

Scheduled to hit stores in June, the smart toothbrush will be on the expensive side at $300, sitting at the top end of Oral-B's electric toothbrush line.

The device gives users a dentist's watchful eye on a daily basis. Testers increased their brushing times from less than a minute with a manual toothbrush to 2 minutes and 16 seconds on average, Oral-B said.

Michael Cohen-Dumani, global associate director for Oral-B, told Reuters, "Dentists always tell us: 'People do a great job in the week before they come to visit us and in the week after they visit us. But nothing can hide the fact that when we look inside the mouth we can see all the areas they miss'."

The app also warns users if they are brushing too hard, Cohen-Dumani told Reuters. "It will guide you in terms of how to brush, and you will be able to fully personalize the brushing routine for you," he said.

The new toothbrush will launch at next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
