Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date, Rumors: Fingerprint Sensor Confirmed

Samsung won't reveal its next phone until next week, but a new report has supposedly confirmed the device will come with a fingerprint sensor to unlock the device.

A report by Sammobile said this week that the device, expected to be called the Samsung Galaxy S5, will come with a fingerprint sensor, which works with a vertical swipe of the pad with a single finger while "keeping the finger flat."

Despite rumors that Samsung would use the S5's entire screen as a giant fingerprint sensor, Sammobile confirmed the sensor is built into the phone's home button, like the Apple iPhone 5S, which was released last September.

Users will likely be able to register seven other finger prints and assign each of them to different shortcuts, according to Sammobile.

Other security measures like a PIN code will also be included with the smartphone.

Rumors of a fingerprint sensor really picked up in January for the Galaxy S5, as KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Samsung is feeling the pressure from both the 5S and the HTC One Max, both devices that include the feature.

"Fingerprint is necessary for a star model," Kuo said, according to AppleInsider. "Even (if it) is not as mature as the iPhone 5S's."

The new Galaxy device likely won't come with iris-scanning technology, but a Samsung executive confirmed last month the company is looking into the security feature.

Samsung is expected to debut the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 24.

Make sure to check back once more features are revealed regarding the new smartphone device.
