The Automatic car data device has added iBeacon functionality, which lets retailers locate consumers and send them information, TechCrunch reported.

Most devices that use iOS are capable of using iBeacon if they are configured properly, the outlet noted. Devices released after the iPhone 4s and the third-generation iPad should have the functionality.

The functionality was added through a simple software update, Automatic co-founder Thejo Kote told TechCrunch.

"The good thing with Automatic is that this is something that just comes along for free," he said.

Using Bluetooth 4.0, iBeacon transmitters can relay information to devices based on location.

Using the technology in the Automatic device could eventually make it easier for drivers to pay for parking or gas, according to TechCrunch.

Retailers like Apple have been testing iBeacon technology to know where customers are in the store and give them information.

According to Apple, the service will allow stores to serve customers better, proving such information as iPhone upgrades or where to find a product.

The Automatic device collects data from the driver's every move, noting if the brakes are over-used or if the speed limit is exceeded too often. It also does a rough calculation of fuel economy and expenses based on nationwide gas prices and the vehicle make and model. 

The $100 cartridge, which connects directly to a car's internal computer, is from San Francisco-based startup Automatic Labs. After a recent deal with Apple, the company's vehicle data device is available for purchase at Apple's 250 U.S. stores and in the Apple online store.

Called Automatic Link, the device connects through the ODB-II port standard in all vehicles made after 1996. It then connects to an iPhone through Bluetooth, collecting a plethora of data in the app.
