The 2015 Acura TLX GT Race Car debuted on Tuesday at the Detroit Auto Show and will compete at the Pirelli World Challenge Championship.

The luxury sedan will be part of the GT category of the challenge, vying with a field that includes the Audi R8 LMS, Cadillac CTS-V, Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes SLS, Nissan GTR, Porsche 911 and Ferrari 458, Acura said in a press release.

"The 2015 Acura TLX is a true luxury sport sedan, so it is fitting that the car be raced against several of its natural luxury competitors in the Pirelli World Challenge," Art St. Cyr, North American president of performance development and vice president of product planning and logistics, said in the press release.

The Acura TLX GT Race Car features a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine and is based on the production 2015 Acura TLX by HPD, Honda's racing branch.

RealTime Racing, which is headquartered in Saukville, Wis., will launch a campaign for the new car. The most successful team ever to compete in the Pirelli World Challenge, the RealTime Racing members have won 85 races since entering the series in 1993.

"In our 27 years of racing Hondas and Acuras, we have developed a clear understanding of what it takes to win races and championships," RTR team principal Peter Cunningham said in the press release.

"In 2014, the Pirelli World Challenge GT class looks to be more competitive and diverse than at any time in the 25-year history of the series. RealTime has competed successfully in this category before, and we look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. With the onslaught of these world-class GT-3 competitors joining the fray, we will be working hard to develop the new TLX GT into a winning package. But that's what we love to do."
