2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Trucks Recalled Over Fire Issue

General Motors said it will recall 370,000 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks over a software issue that could cause a fire, according to the automaker.

Customers have been advised by the automaker to avoid leaving their trucks in idle unattended until having the issue fixed by their local dealer.

GM is going to instruct dealers to "reprogram software that could lead to overheating of exhaust components, potentially causing engine compartment fires."

At least eight fires have taken place due to the issue, but no injuries have occurred, GM said in a statement.

Each fire occurred in "very cold weather" locations, according to the automaker.

The affected vehicles come with 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines. Pickups with 6.2-liter V8 engines were not included in the recall.

Consumers may be alerted to the problem by a continuous "check engine light" and an "engine power reduced" message in the driver information center.

The recall begins officially on January 16, according to GM, and dealers are being instructed to upgrade the software in the trucks.

Repair work will take around 20 minutes to complete, according to GM.

Owners with more questions can contact GM at 1-866-694-6546.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not commented on the recall yet.
