2014 International CES Update: Kia UCD Concept Unveiled With Hand-Gesture Controller

The Kia "User-Centered Driver" concept, or UCD, was unveiled at the 2014 International CES with a unique hand-gesture controller, designed to prevent distracted driving, according to the automaker.

"Thanks to advanced infrared light and camera sensors, users can quickly access radio and navigation options with simple hand or finger movements without taking their eyes from the road," said Kia Motors in a press statement.

The automaker has yet to confirm when such technology will appear in a production vehicle, nor have they said how much more that vehicle will cost with the feature.

The UCD concept comes equipped with an 18-inch head-up display, and an "augmented-reality snapshot" of information like navigation, traffic updates, and speed, according to the Korean automaker.

Kia has a big week planned at the event, confirming a number of other exciting new features and vehicles like the Kia IVI.

The Kia IVI is an in-vehicle infotainment concept equipped with a 20-inch multi-touch center console display system. The vehicle has "Smart Radio" functions, which allows users to customize playlists depending on a driver's "mood" according to the automaker.

"Kia's teams are constantly looking for new and better ways to strengthen the relationship between driver and car," Kia said in a statement this week.

Another company, auto parts supplier Visteon, has also revealed plans for a Horizon Cockpit at the show.

"An advanced camera system tracks and mirrors the driver's gestures by mapping movement through a full kinematic spatial hand which, in turn, replicates the motion as a virtual hand on the cockpit's display," said Visteon in a press statement.
