$16.6M Lottery Ticket Expires, Largest Unclaimed Prize in Florida Since 2003

A $16.6 million Powerball ticket expired without a claim on Nov. 21 in Florida after the 180-day deadline passed without the lucky winner coming forward, according to NBC News.

The ticket was purchased at a Carrolwood Market convenience store in Tampa, Florida back in May.

The holder, who chose the numbers 2, 6, 19, 21, 27, and a Powerball of 25, was entitled to a third of the $50 million jackpot.

The other winners were from Delaware and Louisiana, according to the Associated Press.

This isn't the first time a Powerball jackpot has gone unclaimed. Back in 2011, a $77.1 million prize went unclaimed after the Georgia winner never came forward.

When a ticket is not claimed, "the funds to pay a jackpot that goes unclaimed will be returned to the lottery members in their proportion of sales for the jackpot rollover series," according to the Florida Powerball site.

Florida law states that 80 percent of all unclaimed prizes are then transferred to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.

The fund provides "educational benefits to the state" for school construction projects and scholarships, according to NBC News.

The remaining 20 percent goes back to the lottery.

The $16.6 million was the largest unclaimed jackpot in Florida since a $53.7 million jackpot expired in 2003, according to David Bishop, a spokesman for the Florida Lottery, who was interviewed earlier this week.
