Explosion in North China: Several Small Bombs Leaves 1 Dead, 8 Injured (VIDEO)

A number of small bombs exploded near the front of a Communist Party building in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan, killing at least one person and injuring around eight others.

The official Xinhua news agency confirmed that "several small-scale bombs" went off outside an office building of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party, according to Reuters.

"Judging from the scattering of small metal balls, it is suspected that improvised bombs exploded," the Xinhua news agency said, according to Reuters.

There was no immediate explanation for the attack, but incidents like this are not uncommon in China.

Photos have made their way around Chinese social media sites showing smoke filling the wide avenue where the party office is and vehicles with blown out windows.

The photos also show emergency trucks parked outside what looks like undamaged buildings.

Locals have said people in the area ran after around "seven blasts went off," according to Reuters.

One person has been confirmed dead, and eight were wounded, one of which was in critical condition after the explosions.

The Chinese government credited Islamists for an attack in central Beijing last week when a car drove through bystanders on the edge of Tiananmen Square and burst into flames.

Three people were killed in the car and two bystanders were reported dead, according to Reuters.
