GM Recall: 1,658 Sonic Cars Called Back for Fuel Tank Issues

General Motors is recalling approximately 1,658 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles over faulty strap welds that could cause the fuel tank to separate from the car.

The recall involves 2013 and 2014 model-year cars, according to Reuters.

Of the affected vehicles, 1,558 cars are in the United States and 100 in Canada. Most of the vehicles are still on dealer lots, according to GM.

The top selling automaker in the U.S. said it is not aware of any accidents, fires or injuries related to the recall.

If the strap bracket separates, the fuel tank would then rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank shield, leading to "a rattling or scraping noise," GM said. If the fuel filler neck and shield did not support the tank, it could separate from the car completely.

The issue could lead to a fire, said GM, which first discovered the problem at its Orion, Michigan, assembly plant.

Any necessary repairs will be done so free of charge, GM said.

GM has not announced when it will start notifying customers of the recall.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not commented on the recall as it is still not posting recall announcements on its website due to the government shutdown.
