A power plant implosion in Florida destroyed a set of red and white smoke stacks this week. The iconic stacks have been a part of the Port Everglades landscape for the last 50 years according to CBS Miami. 

Over 90 450 lbs of explosives were used to destroy the stacks, which were destroyed so Florida Power & Light Co. can build a new plant that is better for the environment.

The new plant will run on natural gas, using 35 percent less fuel according to CBS Miami.

Expect the new plant to open by 2016.

Florida Power & Light will save hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel costs and customers will see "a drastic" difference in their bills.

The plant will provide power for over 260,000 businesses and homes.

The company predicts the three-year construction will create around 650 direct jobs, 1,000 indirect jobs, and will produce approximately $20-$25 million in new tax revenue annually to local schools and governments according to CBS Miami.

The existing structures will be used to "minimize costs and changes to the landscape" according to the Inquisitr.

Older plants are being removed or rebuilt around the nation to better the environment, the biggest reason some plants haven't done so already is how much it costs to make new ones.
