Electric car maker Lucid Group announced on Tuesday, February 22, that it would recall 203 of its premium Air sedans due to a potential safety issue relating to the EV's suspension. Investors reacted negatively to the news as shares of the company came tumbling down nearly 5 percent.
The recall order of Lucid Motors appears to be precautionary as no failures have been reported thus far in relation to the problem, which stems from the installation of the front strut damper in the sedan's suspension.
According to the California-based company, there was a chance that the front strut damper was improperly assembled by its supplier. Lucid Motors is not aware of any instances of the front strut damper failing in its cars, but the automaker expects about 1 percent of the 203 potentially affected vehicles may have the incorrectly assembled part in the suspension. If our math is correct, around 2-3 vehicles are possibly affected by this incorrectly installed suspension component.
Documents related to the recall notice of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the potentially faulty part in the suspension came from German supplier Bilstein. Lucid was notified by Bilstein that some of its front dampers may have been inaccurately assembled, forcing the carmaker to initiate the recall.
It is not a complete surprise to see Lucid being proactive regarding this issue. The company prides itself in the quality of its electric vehicles, with this being the focus of Lucid alongside teamwork and efficiency.
The recall is a huge blow for Lucid Group as the Air Dream Edition is the company's flagship luxury sedan. This particular model is the first and only EV trim that Lucid Motors has produced thus far. This is just the latest road block for the Air Dream Edition, which suffered production delays in 2021 after the company's successful SPAC merger due to quality issues.

After years of anticipation and hype, Lucid finally started producing its first Air models off the company's AMP-1 assembly line in September 2021. Lucid announced then that it would only make 520 units of this initial $169,000 trim, along with a Performance version that can generate 1,111 horsepower, to match the the Air Dream Edition Range's 520 EPA estimated miles.
Lucid has been busy making deliveries of both versions of the Air Dream Edition to its customers since fall. While delivering those Dream Edition Airs, Lucid has also been simultaneously making three additional trims for the EV sedan that are slotted for deliveries this year. All of these Air Dream Edition cars will be produced by Lucid at its sprawling facility in Casa Grande, Arizona.
The next trim of the Lucid Air that the company will launch in 2022 is the Grand Touring, which has a starting price of $139,000.
