Subaru made quite a shocking revelation at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon on Friday, January 14, surprising motorsports fans with an electric race car concept. The Japanese automaker revealed its STI E-RA concept, an all-electric hypercar that Subaru designed to break records soon.
The main target for Subaru with this electric car is to set a new lap record at Nürburgring Nordschleife. It is not clear what specific record Subaru targets on that particular race circuit, but Volkswagen has laid down the marker with a record time of 6:05 for electric vehicles around the German track. That was set by the ID R back in 2019.
Subaru Tecnica International said that the main purpose of this groundbreaking E-RA concept is to gain experience in new technologies as the auto world shifts its focus to electric motors and batteries. There is no better place for Subaru to test the latest technological advancements but in the world of motorsport, which makes the E-RA concept such a fun and exciting endeavor for a company that is more known for its off-road prowess.
Subaru's new car packs some punch with four electric motors providing 1,073 horsepower. An electric motor is assigned to each wheel for maximum effect. The electric car boasts a four-wheel torque vectoring and a 60-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.
Subaru teamed up with Yamaha to develop this stunning hypercar, with the two companies adopting a technology that features an integrated inverter and gear. With the help of multiple sensors, the inverter monitors everything in the STI E-RA from the car's speed, G-forces, yaw, steering angle, and more.

There is no question that Subaru wants to go fast, and the aim is to test the car in Germany in 2023 to see the fruits of their labor. Currently, the E-RA will remain at home with testing set to be done at Japanese circuits. The 'Ring then awaits next year with Subaru setting a mark of 6:40 for their electric car to break in Germany.
Subaru's development of the E-RA also opens the door for the Japanese company's possible involvement in motor racing and Formula E perhaps. The E-RA's whole setup, including the car's structure, adheres to the guidelines set by the FIA for future E-GT regulations.
Subaru revealed not just the E-RA concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The Japanese automaker also showed a new Solterra STI concept, a car based on the company's all-electric Solterra SUV, which made its debut in Japan and the United States back in November 2021. Subaru did not provide any specific performance upgrades with this new concept, but it did feature a few enhancements on the Solterra SUV's exterior.
