2019 Volvo XC40 Spotted Seems To Confirm The ‘Twin Engine’ Setup

The upcoming Volvo XC40 has been spotted while testing in Denmark. An interesting aspect seems to confirm the "Twin Engine" setup.

A video clip has surfaced on the web, previewing the test drive of several small SUV's from Volvo. It seems that one of the prototypes spotted is the upcoming Volvo XC40.

The new Volvo XC40 appears to have a smaller size but similar form of the existing Volvo XC90. The same XC90 Thor's hammer-shaped headlights can be spotted while the tall and thin taillights were also present. The mule on the clip also has the iconic pointed tailgate midsection.

The prototype spotted on the road appears to have similar styling details from the Volvo Concept 40. In addition, the upcoming Volvo XC40 is expected to utilize the latest Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform. Apparently, this is the first time that the CMA will be used in this compact size category and will soon be used for the successor of V40.

The mule spotted on the video was heavily camouflaged. However, there are some interesting new aspects that can be drawn out.

The XC40 prototype appears to have a gas-electric powertrain. A fuel filler port can catch the eye on the quarter panel on the right side of the new XC40. Whereas on the left side, there is a fender that seems to host the charging port.

Volvo has previously called this gas-electric setup as "Twin Engine." Rumors have also circulated saying the upcoming XC40 will feature a plug-in hybrid version. The prototype undergoing road test appears to confirm this "Twin Engine" setup. However, the automaker has not released any official statement on this so it should still be taken with a grain of salt.

The upcoming XC40 is reportedly coming out with a T5 Twin Engine that will be mated to a three-cylinder with a front-axle mounted electric motor. This setup will also feature a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Another variant of a four-cylinder diesel engine will most likely be offered.

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is expected to start production by the end of the year. Check out below spy video of the new SUV under heavy wraps.
