Microsoft Surface Laptop Review: Gorgeous Outside, But Not Fit For College Students?

The Microsoft Surface laptop is incredibly beautiful on the outside. However, the low specs do not seem to justify its $999 price tag. Reports say that parents would not likely buy the new laptop for their children in college.

In terms of design, the new Surface laptop looks very appealing to its target young market. The new device comes with four gorgeous color variants: Burgundy, Platinum, Graphite Gold and Cobalt Blue.

The body of the new laptop is a full aluminum lid and base, similar to its sibling, Surface Book. Moreover, the outstanding feature of the new Surface laptop is its Alcantara fabric on the keyboards, which was first introduced in the Surface Pro 3.

Microsoft imports the Alcantara fabric from Italy. The tech giant uses a laser cut machine to provide an accurate fit onto each key on the keyboards.

This Alcantara fabric has gained very positive reviews on Microsoft Store page and users seem to like it very much. Users especially like its silky and luxurious feel.

The new Surface laptop is impressive in terms of weight. The new device weighs only 1.25kg, which is exceptional for a 13.5-inch Gorilla Glass 3 touchscreen laptop.

Meanwhile, the new laptop was specifically designed to assist in the education of students. Microsoft's Panos Panay even claimed that the new Surface laptop may endure from enrollment to graduation.

On the contrary, the four-year life span of the new laptop does not seem appealing to many. Others even doubt that the new laptop would not be able to survive the whole four years.

Considering the low specs of the entry-level Intel Core i5 and with only 4GB of RAM, others do not believe the new laptop could last that long. With the low specs, others predict that the new laptop would only be good enough for liberal arts students, and not for more demanding courses like Quantum Mechanics.

In terms of practical buying, others prefer to buy the other available brands with higher capacity of 8GB of RAM for a lesser price than that of the new Surface laptop. Moreover, the new laptop is definitely not very versatile as it reportedly not built for gamers.
