The upcoming 2018 BMW X4 has finally been spotted sporting some light camouflage at a back of a truck in Europe. Since the next-generation BMW X3 is just right around the corner, it is no surprise that its sportier sibling will make its own somewhat "subtle" appearance.
About 3 years ago, the BMW X4 was introduced as a 2015 model. Thus, it is only about time that a new version will be unleashed to the wild. And based on the spy photos, it seems that the next-generation X4 has some serious styling changes.
Basically, from the A-pillar forward, it looks much like the next-generation X3, but with a more aggressive front fascia where a separate bank of LED driving lights is nestled. Its twin kidney grille seems to have been extended farther down with smaller vents.
Meanwhile, there is a more curvaceous roofline along the sides that lead into a liftback-style rear. And those chunky character lines seemed to have smoothed out.
Out back, there are really obvious changes. For one, the badge on rear of the upcoming 2018 BMW X4 is in line with the door handles, providing a more "fastback" look than a "coupe" thanks to that lower rear and new roofline.
The taillights ooze a sort of Mercedes GLC-ish look, well if you believe the camo. And of course the license plates have been moved to the new rear bumper. And the exhaust tips now have that trapezoidal design and are better integrated with the rear bumper.
Under the skin of the upcoming 2018 BMW X4 is the same scalable CLAR architecture employed on the next-generation X3 and used to underpin the latest 7 Series and 5 Series models. This means that the next-generation X4 should not only be lighter but also more PHEV-friendly compared with the outgoing model.
Although there is no official word as regards the powertrain for the upcoming X4 model, we could expect rear-wheel drive and AWD variants. Diesel and petrol engines could be expected as well.
Regarding the interior design and cabin tech, we could expect as well that both the next-generation X3 and X4 should share the same features, with difference in the trim levels and other specs. However, reports point that they could also share some onboard tech with the new 5 Series model such as ParkNow feature and semi-autonomous driving tech.
The upcoming 2018 BMW X4 is expected to debut following the new BMW X3's debut, which is expected to be later this year. And it is still unknown whether this upgraded model will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
