Looking at the 2018 Lincoln Navigator brings to mind a "Continental SUV or a pretty posh Ford Expedition. Regardless, this 4th-generation SUV promises a host of technology and massive improvements compared with its predecessor.
The Navigator is one of the major vehicles that kicked off the glitzy SUVs in the market. However, it was overtaken by the likes of Cadillac Escalade. A decade later, Lincoln is set to take back its throne with the introduction of its Navigator, which pretty much looks much like the concept that was shown at last year's New York auto show.
The automaker claims that the new glitzy SUV went on a strict diet and lost 200 pounds. The highlight of the 2018 Lincoln Navigator is its aluminum-alloy body though still retaining the body-on-frame construction.
The concept's intricate chrome grille and turbine-style wheels have all made it to the production model. Not only that, the Lincoln badge on the center of the grille glows as the driver approaches the vehicle. Nifty, isn't it? This is part of the vehicle's multistage welcome sequence.
Also new are the adaptive headlights that would vary their light pattern depending on the Navigator's speed. A wider beam of light at lower speeds and a narrower beam of light at higher speeds will be shown.
Looking at the Navigator on the side, the hood looks a bit taller, allowing the glitzy SUV to have a more confident posture compared with its predecessor. Plus, this new SUV looks more uprights thanks to its clean proportions and high visual beltline.
Outback, its taillights are still connected by a bar, much like that of the predecessor. Although this time, the taillights have been raised up out of the bar, thus eliminating the droopy appearance. Also redesigned are other lighting elements and the license plate holder.
Engine-wise, the 2018 Lincoln Navigator is supposedly more powerful than the older model. Under the hood is a direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine that is good for 450 horses and 500 lb-ft of torque. Now, considering the significant weight loss, this should provide a significantly improved performance.
Inside the new Navigator are a number of changes, of course. There's a configurable 12-inch instrument cluster, a 20-speaker sound system, a 360-degree camera, and standard Wi-Fi. Available also are six USB ports, a head-up display, trailer back-up assists, and heated, cooled, and massaging front seats with 30-way power adjustability.
A touchscreen sits just above the dashboard and below the air vents are the physical buttons and knobs. Sync 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available. Basically, this upscale and glitzy SUV is technology-packed.
The 2018 Lincoln Navigator goes on sale this fall. Also, the automaker's Black Label is also available for the top trim level of the SUV.
