Honda unveiled its brand new Plug-in Hybrid and Clarity Electric together with the ongoing Clarity Fuel Cell, claiming that it will target U.S. sales of 75,000 Clarity vehicles in the four model years. The new Clarity series is said to contribute to an anticipated five-fold increase in Honda U.S. sales of electrified vehicles.

Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., at the company's auto show press conference, said, "The Honda Clarity is aimed at accelerating the deployment of advanced electrified powertrain technology and bringing electrified vehicles further into the mainstream. "The Clarity series also heralds the advancement of our Honda Electrification Initiative, representing our investment in the full spectrum of electric-vehicle technologies."

Called the Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, both vehicles will feature the same flowing design from the hydrogen-powered FCV and the fun-to-drive DNA. Honda said that there would be three different engine options that will be available that will allow them to offer more eco-friendly alternatives that provide to the growing need for low carbon emission vehicles.

The 2017 Honda Clarity Electric is for customers who need a spacious and comfortable sedan that is combined with the practicality of a fully electric powertrain. The Clarity EV is powered by an electric motor that produces 164 PS and 300 Nm of torque. It gets its power from a 25.5-kWh battery pack that can also be fully recharged in a span of three hours with a 240V DC charging system. It also offers three selectable driving modes such as Normal, Econ, and Sport.

In addition, aside from the highly-efficient engines, the automaker also fitted the Clarity Electric with the newest infotainment and safety systems. Touchscreen audio comes as standard and will be joined by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A lot of safety system from Honda Sensing will also be offered in both the Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid.

As for styling, the new 2017 Honda Clarity Electric has its own unique front fascia and 18-inch wheel designs. It will also have its own halo color and unique set of headlights. The Clarity EV is said to hit U.S. dealerships later this year and will be offered via a lease program in California and Oregon.
