Volkswagen has revealed another member of its I.D. series of concept cars for the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show next week. The company seems to be committed at releasing a series of full-electric vehicles following the dieselgate scandal that has cost the automaker millions.
Following the I.D. hatch presented at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and the I.D. Buzz at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, this full-electric crossover concept is set to challenge the likes of Tesla and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Thus, the Volkswagen Group is set to launch a series of battery-electric concepts wearing the I.D. badge that will range from sedans, sports cars, minivans, and of course SUVs.
Based on the teaser video and image, shown below, the automaker says that the all-electric crossover will blend a "four-door concept" and crossover utility cues. Thus, this could have a coupe-like profile with 4 doors with a rear hatch.
To top that off, buyers can expect an AWD and, to challenge Tesla, a self-driving capability for Volkswagen's all-electric SUV. It's autonomous driving feature will be activated with a push on the VW badge found on the center of the steering wheel.
There wasn't much detail other than the teased image, but Volkswagen's all-electric crossover could be equipped with 2 electric motors that will drive each axle and also a long-range lithium-ion battery.
The crossover could have a range of around 600 km. Also, much similar to the hatch and Kombi, the upcoming all-electric vehicle could be based on VW's Modularen Elekrisch Baukasten (MEB) scalable electric-car architecture.
In a press release, VW said, "Volkswagen has set the clearly defined goal of advancing electric-drive vehicles from the status of a startup niche to large-scale production models by the middle of the next decade in a worldwide product offensive."
Volkswagen seems to be fully committed to their electric vehicle program following the very controversial diesel emission scandal that cost the company not only millions but also their reputation as an automaker. But we will know more of VW's all-electric crossover concept on April 18.
