Microsoft Releases Xbox Project Scorpio Dev Kit

The successor of the Xbox One console is expected to hit the market before the end of the year. Currently called as Project Scorpio, the console promises upgrades in order to boost performance from its current-generation predecessor.

The gaming community, especially Xbox fans, are excited about what Microsoft have been working on for in a while. A handful of leaks may have hinted about what the specs of Project Scorpio are, but unless Microsoft verifies it these rumors should be treated with a grain of salt.

Microsoft head of Xbox Phil Spencer told Gamasutra, "The ideas behind [the Xbox One] S were in flight slightly, because we knew we would do something in terms of a hardware refresh. But in terms of something more powerful, that kind of came in at that time."

The Project Scorpio console is expected to pack a custom processor with eight cores clocked at 2.3GHz. Graphics processing is handled by a Polaris-based GPU clocked at 1.172GHz and sports 40 CUDA cores. The console is expected to have 12GB of GDDR5 memory and 1TB of storage space.

Recently, Microsoft released a Project Scorpio dev kit for game developers. The dev kit has a slightly upgraded specs. The generous amount of resources provided by the dev kit will allow game developers a lot of headroom to push their projects to the max and bring them to life.

Regarding the Xbox Project Scorpio dev kit, the console is packing the same processor and a slightly powerful GPU. Memory is a precious resource when it comes to game development, which is why Microsoft packed the Project Scorpio dev kit with 24GB of GDDR5 memory, according to Engadget.
