Family Awarded $90M For Daughter’s Death In Maryland Car Accident

A Maryland jury awarded $90 million to the family of a girl who died after getting hit by a car today, April 17, according to the Associated Press.

In 2009, Ashley Davis, 13, was killed after getting hit by a Lincoln Continental as she was walking to her school bus stop in Temple Hills according to NBC News. The car also hit a 17-year-old and a motor vehicle.

"She was on her way," her mother, Nycole Davis, said to NBC Washington. "She was doing the right thing. She was going to school. She was a good girl. She didn't deserve this."

John Costello, the family's lawyer, claims that the school was negligent and the incident should have never taken place.

"They had adopted a policy to provide for safe transportation," said Costello according to NBC Washington. "The policy was they were going to pick up Ashley on her own side of the street. They never did. They forced her to cross the street. She got killed crossing the street."

The 6-member Prince George's County jury awarded the family a verdict of $90 million in damages and will pay for all medical expenses and funeral costs.

The case could be far from over however, as the school system is expected to appeal the decision.

School system spokesman Birant Coleman stated that he would not comment on the case because the school has yet to formally announce what they plan on doing next.

"If she didn't have to cross the street she'd be graduating this year," Nycole Davis said according to NBC Washington. "She'd be going to prom this year."
