Spied! 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible Caught On GM’s Proving Grounds

A Chevrolet prototype was spied prancing about in General Motor's proving grounds, and it sports the characteristics of the Corvette ZR1. It looks to be the convertible type, judging from its top. It has the same bulge at the front that hints a supercharger and it has the same design elements seen so far in the ZR1.

The upcoming Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has a camouflage, but it did not help in hiding the vents in the front bumper. The smaller rear wing was also out in the open. At this point, spies have not yet witnessed a larger wing on the ZR1 convertible, and it might remain that way. While the coupe models have either, the soft-top car might only have the smaller wing option. The tall wing is possibly exclusive to the coupe as part of a track package.

The 5-split spoke wheels, which are likely to be exclusive to the convertible Corvette ZR1 as they have not been seen on other models yet, can also be seen at the rear. While these signs paint a good picture of what the convertible is going to look like, fans are itching to know what could be under the hood.

The Corvette ZR1 is expected to top the other Chevrolet convertibles, the Corvette Z06 and the Camaro ZL1. While the engine is yet to be revealed, it could be a supercharged version of the Z06's LT4 V8 or it could sport the quad-cam V8. It is also expected to have beyond 700 horsepower, which would be an improvement from the Z06 and the Camaro ZL1.

A better suspension and bigger brakes should also come with the increase in power, but that is about all that is currently known of the Corvette ZR1. In terms of price, however, the ZR1 is also expected to top its siblings.

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 - both convertible and coupe models - is launching later this year. GM is yet to announce a specific date and venue for its grand reveal.
