Spider-Man's stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may not last long. This is according to Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal.
Spider-Man not staying long in the MCU according to the movie producer. The movie rights to Spider-Man, as it is known, have been with Sony Pictures for the longest time. The web crawler's mainstream movie success started with the Raimi trilogy which was followed-up by a reboot from director Marc Webb. The sequel to the reboot was released but tanked, unfortunately. This helped Sony Pictures decide that another film would be a bad idea and to just loan the superhero over to the MCU for Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as a still unnamed sequel.
Spider-Man's appearance in the MCU is all thanks to a deal struck between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and its parent company Disney. However, the superhero's appearance could be short-lived.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, producer Pascal said, "One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often." She further added, "In fact, it may never happen again, after we do the sequel. Because Sony, and Disney, and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film."
Although the producer's comments mean that superhero could be leaving the MCU after a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, which is probably what the contract between the three companies state, it doesn't necessarily mean that an extension could not happen. This would all likely depend on whether or not the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man sees success within the MCU.
It should be noted that Sony Pictures has got plans for the web crawler and related characters in the form of a standalone Venom movie. There is also speculation that the company is also looking into a movie teaming up the characters of comic book characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.
