Audi and BMW's Rivalry Reaches New Heights With New Plans and Renders

The rivalry between Audi and BMW is becoming tighter as Audi decides to make the fourth-generation A8 model to be unveiled on July 11th. Recently, Audi has confirmed that they will launch three fully-electric cars on sale by 2020.

In an interview with Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi's chief executive Rupert Stadler said that one of the company's future renders would be an electric sports car which will serve as a direct competitor to the BMW i8. Stadler, as always, did not reveal further details about the electric supercar, but did confirm it will arrive after the upcoming all-electric SUV, and at a time to its future compact electric car similar to the Volkswagen I.D.

Stadler said in an interview, "There is, first of all, an SUV. We decided to go the SUV way because, even though the architecture is a little more [complicated] because you don't have the perfect aerodynamics, people love to sit in an SUV, and we have to respect the growing trend of SUV segments. I think this was two or three years ago [absolutely] the right decision."

.The current plans of BMW for the i8 are still unknown, but some suggest that the brand may decide to significantly overhaul and upgrade the model with more power for its next generation. If that happens, Audi will have to be prepared to lift its future electric sports car model to a point in the market previously occupied by the canceled and unsuccessful Audi R8 E-tron.

What do you think of this rivalry? Do you say Audi A8 is a little too late to produce a rival for the BMW i8? Or will it come out just in time to perhaps go up against the i8 if BMW plans to continue with the nameplate? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
