GM Reveals Its 2012 Suppliers of the Year Winners, Introduces New Top Award (VIDEO)

General Motors recognized 83 of its top global automotive suppliers on Mar. 13 during the 21st annual Supplier of the Year awards ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, M.I. The Supplier of the Year award is given to less than 1 percent of GM's 18,500 suppliers around the globe according to GM.

Suppliers are awarded for superior quality, timely crisis management, delivering innovative technology, amongst other requirements.

"Suppliers play a critical role in our business and we're thrilled to recognize those we consider to be world-class," said Grace Lieblein, GM vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain in a company press release. "Each winning company consistently exceeded our expectations by being innovative, delivering high quality products and services on time and by creating outstanding value."

Of the 83 winners, only five are certified diverse suppliers and 46 won an award at the 2011 ceremony.

GM also introduced a new award at the ceremony called the Overdrive award, which was given to four different companies. The new award was designed to recognize suppliers who have "undertaken extraordinary initiatives" that increased business for the company.

The 2012 General Motors Overdrive award recipients are:

 -Ideal Contracting, Detroit

 -Clark Cutler McDermott, Franklin, Mass.

-International Automotive Component Group, Southfield, Mich.

 -SL Corporation, South Korea.

"The Overdrive Award recognizes those world-class companies that have truly gone above and beyond," Lieblein said according to the press release. "They have not only met the demands of our business, they have also demonstrated through their actions a great commitment to their communities."

The Overdrive and Supplier of the Year winners were chosen by a global team of GM engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and logistics executives according to the press release.
