Jeep Wrangler Pickup: 'A Ram in Jeep's Clothing?'

The upcoming Jeep Wrangler Pickup will likely begin production in 2019. The truck remains unnamed, but recent reports revealed that it could use a Ram frame.

According to a report by Automotive News' FCA reporter Larry Vellequette, the upcoming pickup truck could show up as a "Ram in Jeep's clothing." The report stated that there is an evidence that the new pickup truck might be similar to the Jeep Gladiator. This was DaimlerChrysler's 2005 concept pickup truck that was favored by many. The concept vehicle basically put Wrangler parts on a Dodge Ram 1500 chassis.

Previously, the last report stated that the upcoming Jeep Wrangler Pickup had been pushed back once again. Initially pushed back until mid-2018, Mike Manley went on the record to state that it won't hit production until sometime in late 2019. Moreover, no name was available at the time.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne together with Jeep head Mike Manley said that they were considering historical Jeep names. Perhaps, this is also where Vellequette got the idea about the Ram frame?

According to a report by The Drive, Vellequette's evidence is largely circumstantial. In the first report, the Automotive News FCA reporter cites the fact that FCA is pushing back production until 2019 because it will be too long for the existing paint shop at the Toledo, Ohio factory.

In addition, Velequette also points out that FCA CEO Marchionne already began considering bringing Ram production back to the U.S. from Mexico. And the best place to bring the Ram production would be in the Wrangler Toledo factory which has a proven capability of taking on additional volume in production. All in all, it would be a good place to make Ram trucks, as well as the new Jeep trucks. Considering that they could build both of the trucks in the same plant, the reporter likely inferred that maybe the Jeep pickup trucks could have a Ram frame.

The report by Velequette is really a bit of a stretch and has no concrete evidence. While there has been no confirmation, the possibility does exist that he could be correct.

The unnamed Jeep Wrangler pickup will be the return of something great. A wrangler with a longer pickup bed would be a beautiful sight. But what about a Jeep pickup with a Ram frame? Share your thoughts and comments below!
