The new race-ready Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R made its debut at the Pirelli World Challenge at St. Petersburg, Florida. This specific vehicle was designed and built to meet the FIA GT4 regulations. However, it lost to its eternal rival, the Ford Mustang Boss 302.

The Camaro GT4.R is Chevy's brand new racing version of the Camaro and was built for international GT4 class rules. This would allow it to race in both the US and Europe against other cars.

This new race car was built on the recently unveiled Chevrolet Camaro Z1 1LE, which could be the most hardcore version of the Camaro for people who do not have driving licenses. From there, substantial enhancements and changes were added, starting with the engine.

Now, since GT4 class rules forbid the use of a supercharged engine, which the stock Camaro Z1 1LE is equipped with, the naturally-aspirated LT1 6.2-liter V8 from the Camaro SS instead was dropped into the race-ready Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.

Thus, from the 650 horses produced by the LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V8 of the Camaro SS, the new Camaro GT4.R's engine is now tuned to about 420 hp. The Xtrac sequential transmission and limited-slip differential put the power to the ground, according to SuperChevy.

The grease monkeys at Pratt & Miller Engineering were in charge of taking the Camaro to a new level of race-ready capability. Besides the drivetrain swapping, Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers, adjustable traction control, and adjustable ABS braking system were installed.

Also, new race-ready Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R weighs around 3,150 lbs since virtually everything inside has been stripped off and the nose panel, doors, hood, and trunk are made of lightweight carbon fiber. The GT4.R has retained the Camaro Z1 1LE look except for the additional adjustable large rear wing, dive planes, and front splitter. Plus, an FIA-approved rollcage, fire suppression system, and removable steering wheel fitted with multiple driver aids have been added.

Of course, you would initially think the new race-ready Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R had what it takes to compete with the Ford Mustang Boss 302 last weekend. Despite the Camaro GT4.R, piloted by Lawson Aschenbach, qualifying for on pole for Blackdog Speed Shop, Mustang Boss 302 took the lead early in the race and kept holding on to it, driven by Andrew Aquilante, reports AutoWeek.
