Google is Working on Pixel 2 Flagship, Smartphone Might Ditch 3.5mm Headphone Jack

With the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone 8 widely speculated to be released within the near future, new rumors have also hinted that tech giant Google is also working on its own upcoming flagship smartphone. Several tech outlets claim that Google is working on the successor to its Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones which were released last year.

Google has yet to confirm this but an open source Android collaboration page have revealed two mysterious smartphones. The two devices have internal company codenames "walleye" and "muskie." These two codenames point to two freshwater fishes that remind many in the tech community about the marlin and the sailfish, the codenames of the first-generation Google Pixel smartphones, according to Tech Radar.

Only the walleye codename was mentioned in the Android Open Source Project's code archive. Nevertheless, the muskie codename was tossed around several tech forums. It would appear that Google will continue to employ its phone naming scheme based on water-dwelling creatures.

Some rumors claim that the Google Pixel 2 will take some design cues from the iPhone 7. There are hints pointing to a possibility that the next Pixel devices could ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack which the iPhone 7 promptly did on its latest design. According to 9to5Google, this rumor started to surface when a leaked Google documentation suggested that the upcoming Pixel devices will indeed ditch the headphone jack.

Google has kept its silence about the existence of this two devices, so it is wise to take these rumors and speculations with a grain of salt. The Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones will celebrate their first-year anniversary this fall, so it might be too early for Google to release a successor to these two devices.
