Prisoner Gets 15.5 Million After Serving 22 Months In Solitary Confinement, Wasn’t Allowed To See A Dentist (PHOTOS)

A man who spent 22 months in solitary confinement in a New Mexico jail and was neglected to the point where he had to pull out his own tooth because he was told he could not see a dentist was awarded $15.5 million according to NBC News.

Stephen Slevin, 59, and his attorney originally asked for $22 million, but the money he will receive is still one of the largest prisoner civil rights payouts ever in the U.S.

"His mental health has been severely compromised from the time he was in that facility. That continues to be the same. No amount of money will bring back what they took away from him," Matt Coyte, Slevin's attorney, said on March 6 according to NBC News. "But it's nice to be able to get him some money so he can improve where he is in life and move on."

During the 22 months he was in jail, Slevin lost 50 pounds, developed bedsores and his finger nails grew so long they started to curl over. Fungus started to grow on his skin as well since he was deprived of being allowed to use a shower.

By the time Slevin got out of prison, his hair was shaggy and he was sporting an overgrown, bushy beard. His face also appeared much paler and thinner compared to a photo taken right before he entered the jail cell.

"Your insanity builds. Some people holler or throw feces out their cell doors," Coyte said according to NBC News. "Others rock back and forth under a blanket for a year or more, which is what my client did."

Slevin was originally arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and stealing a car, which it turned out he had borrowed from a friend. He was never brought before a judge however, nor officially convicted of a crime.

His attorney stated that his Slevin was dealing with depression at the time, and his health issues only continued during solitary confinement. Slevin also has lung cancer and now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his time in a jail according to Yahoo.

"Why they did what they did, I'll never know," Slevin told KOB4-TV. "Walking by me, watching me deteriorate day after day after day, and they did nothing at all to get me help."

Dona Ana County's public information director Jess Williams stated that the jail is making more of an effort to "improve the way they treat their prisoners with mental illnesses."
