Porsche Design Book One vs Surface Book: The Future Looks Bright for 2-in-1 Laptops

Porsche is an established brand in the motoring market, especially high-performance luxury cars. Lately, Porsche is trying to push its market even further by releasing the Porsche Design Book One.

The Porsche Design Book One is a 2-in-1 laptop, which means the display can be detached from the physical keyboard and used as a tablet. From the get go, it is obviously clear that Porsche Design is trying to snatch some market share out of the current leader of the high-end 2-in-1 devices, the Microsoft Surface Book.

Specifications vs Price. The Book One and the Surface Book both run on the Windows 10 Pro operating system. This puts the two devices in equal playing field when it comes to software and features.

The Book One is equipped with a seventh-generation Intel Kaby Lake Core i7-7500U processor. It is a dual-core chip that has a 2.7GHz base clock and a 3.5GHz boost clock. The laptop has 512GB PCIe SSD for storage and 16GB LPDDR3 memory module clocked at 1866MHz. This particular model costs $2,495.

Using the same price point, you will get a Surface Book that has a rather dated sixth-generation Intel Skylake CPU. It has a Core i7-6600U processor which has a 2.6GHz base clock and 3.4GHz boost clock. It comes with 512GB SSD storage space and 16GB of memory.

Looking at this aspect alone, the Book One clearly has the upper hand. However, the Surface Book can be configured to sport a more powerful processor and more RAM, but this means a steeper price tag.

Display. The Book One and the Surface Book both have excellent displays. Not a lot of comparison can be made here as they sport an almost identical display spec.

The Surface Book sports a 13.5-inch PixelSense IPS display with a 3000x2000 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. On the other hand, the Book One packs a 13.3-inch IPS Quad-HD display with 3200x1800 resolution and 16:9 aspect ration.

Battery. The Porsche Design Book One packs a 70Wh battery capacity. 25Wh of which is integrated on the display and 45Wh is on the keyboard dock. Porsche Design rated it to last for 14 hours and can charge from zero to 100 percent in less than two hours.

The Surface Book has a larger battery capacity. 62Wh is integrated with the physical keyboard and 18Wh in the Clipboard. Microsoft rates the laptop to last up to 12 hours on a single full charge.

Conclusion. The Microsoft Surface Book is a tested device that has made its name all these years. Real-time benchmarks can justify the Surface Book’s price tag.

On the other hand, the Porsche Design Book One is expected to ship in April, so no real-time benchmarks have been made yet. Porsche’s laptop does look good on paper, but whether or not this translates to a real-world performance is yet to be proven.
