The all-new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is on its way to American showrooms this May. When it arrives, it will have a starting price of $30,000, according to the brand's North American CEO, Hinrich Woebcken.
At the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Woebcken said, "In the past, VW used to charge a premium compared to the competition. To that end, the Atlas sits between the Chevy Traverse and Ford Explorer in terms of entry-level pricing."
The new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a huge car that is based on the MQB platform that also underpins the Gold Compact, showing the flexibility of the platform. Taking on its rivals such as the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander isn't an easy task, but fortunately, the new model will start with a well-sorted and well-developed platform.
The Atlas will be available with two powertrains. First one is a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 that makes 235 hp, and it comes with an FWD configuration. The other one is a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 276 hp, and it comes with 4Motion AWD system, and this particular version of the Atlas has been tested. The automaker only offers an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 18-inch wheels of the car give it an aggressive appearance, but VW offers 20-inch one as an option. The car measures 198.3 inches, while the width and height are 77.9 and 69.6 inches respectively.
On the inside, the Atlas is very spacious. There is more than enough headroom and legroom no matter where the passengers will sit. It also boasts a huge widescreen up front and a panoramic sunroof up top.
The steering wheel is small and wrapped in quality leather, and all the car's buttons and knobs are accessible and practical. In addition, a new eight-inch touchscreen, and the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also installed.
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas will be manufactured in Tennessee and will hit the market by the end of spring. The starting price will be $30,000 as mentioned earlier and just above $50,000 for the top-shelf version of the Atlas.
