2017 Chrysler Portal: Created By Millennials For Millennials

Chrysler is an American car brand and a well-established premium marque of the FCA US LLC. The Fiat Chrysler was forward-looking and ambitious at the CES when they released the 2017 Chrysler Portal concept. Their design and engineering department, the Millennials, were asked to create a car that they would want to drive and they wanted a vehicle that is environmentally aware, proficient in the use of modern technology, and cost conscious.

The 2017 Chrysler Portal concept has a current and near-term sensor technology that comes with an advanced computing power and vehicle network infrastructure for its SAE Level 3 autonomous driving. It is designed to receive technology upgrades in order for the owner to operate the car in a full autonomous driving mode as desired. If the vehicle determines that the driver is not monitoring the road or if the driving conditions change, it gives the driver an alert to retake manual control and if the driver does not respond to the alerts, the vehicle will drive itself to the side of the road and make a safe stop.

For the drivers and owners to operate into Level 3 autonomous driving mode, the concept must know and see its location and its surroundings. The car depends on a bunch of sensing technologies which includes the cameras, the radar, the LIDAR, and the ultrasonic.

Furthermore, the sensing technologies that were mentioned are now used in some FCA vehicles. The car is provided with a steering wheel that condenses and retracts into the instrument panel that opens a space in front of the driver and provides a seamless look for the entire instrument panel.

The interior of the 2017 Chrysler Portal Concept has about 180 cubic feet of space which could possibly hold up to 6 adults and which also has a low flat floor, comfortable and adjustable seats and console, carbon fiber X-brace, and 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack. There is also a Wi-Fi inside the vehicle to enable community social sharing and collaboration. The all-electric vehicle is estimated to have 250 miles of range on a full charge.
