New Motorola Moto Mods Prototype Adds Alexa Functionalities To Smartphones

The Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus are expected to be able to stand on their own against some of their closest rivals. However, what separates these two devices from the competition is their optional Moto Mods, those removable devices integrated on the back of the smartphones.

With the Mobile World Congress already open, a slew of new Moto Mods are also expected to be unveiled at the event. One particular Mod that has got people talking is the one that has Alexa integration. This Moto Mod brings all the helpful features of Amazon's smart digital assistant. It essentially turns a smartphone into a portable Amazon Echo.

The Moto Mod is still in its prototype stage. However, during its keynote at the Mobile World Congress, Amazon present a concept video that shows a working prototype of the device. The Mod is attached to the back of a Moto Z smartphone, and users can use it in the same way as the Amazon Echo. The Mod also sports the blue ombre glow found on an Echo which tells users that they have activated Alexa, according to The Verge. The Alexa Moto Mod is expected to be released later this year.

Aside from the Alexa Moto Mod, Motorola announced that it is also working on a Moto Mod gaming pad which can be snapped on the side of the Moto Z, according to PC Mag. Based on the presentation photos, this Mod turns a smartphone into what looks like a portable Nintendo Switch. The Mod features gaming controls, a built-in speaker, and some pre-loaded games. The official price of this particular Moto Mod is still unknown, although it is expected to hit the market this summer.

Motorola has also presented several Moto Mod concepts, including a photo printer, a Mod-tower which can be used to charge multiple Mods, a multi-SIM adapter, a power pack, and a wireless charging adaptor.
