The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. Stricter fuel economy and emission rules are pushing global car companies to manufacture electric vehicles and hybrids just to comply. The Cruze Diesel is proof that a non-hybrid diesel vehicle can be engineered to be fuel efficient and have really low carbon dioxide emissions.

The Chevy Cruze Diesel's engine is a new 1.6-liter four-cylinder CDTi diesel engine straight from Europe. It has been built and designed to provide impressive performance, fuel efficiency, and most of all a healthy level of carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the new engine is a whole lot quieter than the company's previous 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. Aside from the reduction in noise, General Motors has worked on meticulously reducing engine vibration. It can run on B20 diesel which is 20 percent biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel.

According to General Motors vice president for global propulsion systems Dan Nicholson, diesel engines have an important role in the company. He said, "Diesels are, and will play, an important part in our overall CAFE targets and goals."

The engineering of this new diesel engine will probably be not the most difficult task that the company will face. General Motors has a lot to do in terms of changing buyer attitude towards diesel technology given that it diesel engines have quite the reputation of emitting really high levels carbon dioxide.

The 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel is 250 pounds lighter than the previous model. The Cruze Diesel's engine itself is 33 pounds lighter in fact. It is mated to a responsive six-speed manual transmission which helps the vehicle's powertrain to be as efficient as possible. It uses significantly less energy than the nine-speed automatic transmission on the previous model.
