‘Overwatch’ Updates: Italian City Used To Create Mexican Map, Game To Include New Character

"Overwatch" did oversee something. While the Mexican-themed map was being created, an actual Italian city was used as the reference, accidentally.

"Overwatch" director Jeff Kaplan admitted that while creating the Mexican-themed map known as Dorado, Blizzard used the Italian city of Manarola as a reference point for the style and design. Blizzard wanted to create a colorful Mexican city for the game. The cities Mexico City and Tijuana did not match up.

The research that went behind the inspiration to create a Mexican city was overlooked and as a result, the studio used Google Images to get what they wanted, reported Game Rant.

"Being the utmost, top researchers in the industry, we went to Google Images and typed in - this is literally like, you can type this in right now on your phone if you want - "colorful Mexican town" is what we typed in. And we weren't even looking at the pictures; we were just looking at the thumbnails pictures," Kaplan said.

When the picture of Manarola came up, the team felt it is just perfect and the exact version of Mexico that they had in mind, reported PC GamesN. "We hadn't even blown up the picture, but the one we talked about the most that really fit the grey box block out of the map that we had, was this one right here [below], which was just gorgeous, this coastal, seaside town," Kaplan added.

To top it all, Blizzard never really was aware of the mistake until an outsider pointed it out to them. "I promise the citizens of Mexico, when we make the Italy map, we will only use a reference of Mexico for that," Kaplan joked.

It is reported that Blizzard is now working on fresh content for "Overwatch" and is all set to unleash 'multiple heroes' in the game. The developer confirmed the addition of a young robotics expert named Efi Oladele to help create the new hero.
