Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous+ Mode Up Close

The Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode reportedly accelerates harder than it can stop. A closer look at the Ludicrous acceleration run is available below.

Previously, Engadget reported that the Model S P100D is the fastest accelerating production car in the world. The electric vehicle's record for 0 to 60 mph acceleration was 2.2755 seconds using a new Easter Egg mode called the Ludicrous+.

The zero to 60 testing got even more interesting when the analysis revealed that the Tesla Model S P100D accelerates harder than it brakes. The motor pulls its hardest from 10 to 50 mph and averages 1.14 g of acceleration. In contrast, the antilock braking system can only muster 1.11 g of average deceleration from 50 to 10 mph.

Time = -1 Minute. At the negative one minute mark, the Ludicrous+ mode is activated by pressing and holding down the "Ludicrous" button. The Tesla Model S P100D displays a warning screen should be accepted as well. The battery and motor-conditioning process begins then a message that says "Are you sure you want to push the limits? This will cause accelerated wear of the motor, gearbox, and battery."

Time = -2 seconds to 0 seconds. At -2 seconds, the driver activates launch mode by holding the brake and pumping (flooring then releasing) the accelerator pedal. The "Launch Mode" message appears on the screen and the motor voltage waveforms reach 4 volts at 3 Hz.

At -1 second, the driver depresses the brake hard and then floor the accelerator. This results in the master cylinder pressure ramping up to 105 bar or 1,523 psi. The holding torque will go up to 550 lb-ft.

At -0.26 seconds, the driver then releases the brake. As a result, 791 lb-ft of combined torque happens. In addition, 1,119 pounds of Force is sent to each front tire patch while 2,166 pounds of Force goes to each rear tire contact patch.

At 0 seconds, the Tesla Model S P100D crosses the 1-foot mark and the timing begins. The car is now traveling at 5.9 mph and averaging 1.3 g of longitudinal acceleration.

Time = 0.4 seconds to 10.52 seconds. At 0.4 seconds, the longitudinal acceleration peaks at 1.41 g and the car accelerates past 10.3 mph. At 0.87 seconds, the car is at 30 mph and has already traveled 24 feet and 8 inches.

At 1.3 seconds, the two motors and battery pack peak at 1,850 amps. At 1.76 seconds, the combined motor output power also peaks at 680 horsepower. The vehicle is now traveling at 51 mph.

At 2.28 seconds, the car crosses the 60 mph mark. At 10.52 seconds, the car passes the quarter-mile mark at 125 mph.
