The film "C'était un Rendez-vous" is a 1976 9-minute short about a man driving through downtown Paris in the early morning of a Sunday at high speeds. To celebrate the film's 40th anniversary, Ford went ahead and shot a remake with a Mustang GT.
Ford remakes "C'était un Rendez-vous" with Mustang GT. The original film had a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 with its bumper mounted with a gyro-stabilised camera. The soundtrack of the film was a recording of a Ferrari. The original film was able to pull off the madman-like drive through Paris streets with the help of officials who closed roads and controlled traffic.
The original film was shot in a single take and shows a drive through downtown Paris. The driver apparently ignores pedestrians, traffic signs, and traffic rules such as going through the wrong way on one-way streets. The driver eventually reaches his destination, gets off and embraces a young blonde woman with the famous Paris backdrop. Viewers never get to see the driver's face or the vehicle used all throughout the film.
It has been confirmed in a documentary on the film that the driver was the film's director Claude Lelouch. The woman at the end is actually Lelouch's girlfriend who was asked to meet him at the end of the film. When translated to English, the title actually says "it was a date" and although the film is about a man trying to get to his date as fast as he can, the film is actually more famous for the high-speed sightseeing of the French city.
Ford went ahead with the remake after getting approval from the original's director. In the remake, the vehicle used is a Mustang GT. Its engine's roar is also used for the soundtrack. Unlike the original, the remake gives viewers new angles to experience the drive thanks to 360-degree cameras.
The full video of the remake has yet to be released. The car manufacturer, however, has posted a video teaser.
