Ross had been receiving death threats before the shooting, but didn't take it seriously according to TMZ. Now he considered the shooting an "eye-opener" which caused him to hire his own security team.

Ross, whose real name is William Roberts, was shot at while driving away from his birthday party in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Jan. 28. No shots hit Ross or his passenger, rumored girlfriend Shateria Moragne-el, but his 2011 Rolls Royce did crash into an apartment while his driver tried speeding away.

"A giant kaboom knocked me off the bed and I went to the front door and all I saw was a car," said Beth Balk, who lives in the building according to ABC News.

Nobody was injured in the shooting or crash, but a few local businesses in the area were damaged from the bullets.

"I'm not surprised that it happened given recent ongoings, when someone doesn't understand the street rules they get confused and incidents like this can take place," said "Freeway" Ricky Ross, who claims his identity was stolen by the rapper. "I'm still dealing with ongoing litigation about something as basic as using my name and identity, that should have been dealt with properly a long time ago. No ill will is wished upon anyone, but when you tell these stories about the streets you have to be careful."

The 37-year-old rapper has released five studio albums, and is the founder of the record label Mayback Music Group.

Police are still looking for the vehicle and suspect responsible for the shooting.
