‘Dragon Ball Super’ Episode 78 Review & Recap: Tournament Of Power Rules; Buu’s First Fight

"Dragon Ball Super" Episode 78 revealed the shocking "Tournament of Power" rules, specifically what the winner and losers will get, and the beginning of Buu's first match against Universe 9. This latest episode set the stage for a brand new arc, "Universal Survival" arc, and has significantly propelled the series forward, as the fate of the universe is now at stake. Be warned, spoilers ahead.

This episode was spent so much as to build the excitement for the upcoming episodes. Plus, we get to see so many gods. Goku is seen gathering allies as he faces the repercussions of his naivety and silliness.

"Dragon Ball Super" Episode 78 opens with the Grand Priest, Zeno's assistant, informing Goku and the others of the tournament rules and what's at stake. The winner practically gets nothing other than a wish from the Super Dragon Balls. Meanwhile, it doesn't look good for the losing teams.

What the losing team will get is the complete annihilation of their own universe, reports IGN. This did not sit well with everyone. Imagine that your life is not the only life at stake, but the lives of everybody else. The extent of Zeno's wickedness seems to see no bound. But Goku did not want this to happen, for he is now responsible for the 11 out of 12 universes.

The only way for this to end up positively is for Goku's team to win. And then he wishes from the Super Dragon Balls that everything will be restored. But hey, this is a future that might be so uncertain right now.

Universe 7 is composed of Goku, Gohan, and Buu. Originally, Goku wanted Vegeta to fight with him. Vegeta wanted to stay with Bulma's due to her pregnancy. Thus, Gohan steps in despite him being afraid, yet he wants to protect Videl and Pan.

But surprising at it is, Buu also became part of Team Goku in "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 78. Of course, Hercule tags along because Buu only listens and talks to him. Hercule was a significant character in the "Dragon Ball Z" Evil Buu arc. Now, we get to watch their blooming friendship all over again.

So prior to the main Tournament of Power, the future Zeno asked for an exhibition match between Universe 7 and 9, 3 on 3. Universe 7 will be fighting against Universe 9's 3 wolf-like creatures.

The first fight happens to be between Buu and Basil, a fast and kick-crazy red wolf. However, "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 78 ended as their fight was heating up, although Buu's ass was literally kicked all over the place. But up close, you get to see Buu's iconic smirk, which could mean he is up to something interesting. Remember Buu's smirk during his evil self-arc?

Overall, "Dragon Ball Super" Episode 78 paced fairly good in terms of building the excitement and opening a new arc. We get to see how Goku will handle the consequences of his actions in the following episodes and whether Universe 7 will win, this time.

Episode 79, aptly titled "Buu vs. Basil," will surely make us grip the edge of our seats as we watch them battle. Buu better not make Zeno bored, or else everyone will be erased. Check out the next episode's trailer below.
